MOTIVATION MONDAYS

Exercise has always been a big part of our lives. Whether it be going for a walk or weight lifting, it has generally been promoted throughout history. For hemophiliacs though, the history has been different. Until about the 1970s, those who suffered from hemophilia were taught to avoid any physical activity and sports. There was, and still is, a perceived risk of injury. However, during the mid 70s, public opinion on exercise for hemophiliacs started to take a turn. Now, multiple hemophilia organizations like the National Hemophilia Foundation, (NHF), actually suggest low risk exercise for patients with hemophilia. The NHF has a document Playing-It-Safe, listing the different sports and activities and how they rank in terms of risk for those suffering from hemophilia. You can access it here.
This document lists bicycling anywhere from low-moderate risk to high risk. That does not stop an Instagram user by the username @singlebleedmtb. He suffers from Hemophilia A, is level severe, yet also is an avid biker. He says he got into cycling in college, after swimming did not work out for him, because cycling made him feel like an athlete. First road cycling and now mountain biking, he enjoys the wind in his face and attempting technical climbs. He says that his factor, Jivi, lets him live life to the fullest as he is self infusing every 4-5 days.
Singlebleedmtb recognizes that yes, hemophilia is a disease but says it is not a curse. He says that if you have it "you're mentally stronger than 99% of the people your age because of what you went through as a child," and stresses to "take care of your joints... medicate on time, find a healthy sport that doesn't hurt your target joints, and find a reason to smile every day." He says that his motivation is that he wants his children in the future to see their dad as super man. While you always should talk to a hematologist or a treatment center before attempting any exercise or sports or related, do not let anything stop you.
