Charities are a great way to support causes and have a nice fuzzy feeling in your heart. With the growing internet, charities are everywhere, and you can find one with just a Google search. There are so many so how do you pick one? In the NFL, players pick the charities most important to them through an initiative called My Cause My Cleats.
The My Cause My Cleats program was started in 2016 in an effort for NFL players to present their most meaningful charitable cause in front of a national audience. According to DenverBroncos.com, "Participating players will have the opportunity to wear custom-designed cleats in support of their chosen cause during Week 13 games."
Mac Jones, a football quarterback for the New England Patriots, began to present his important cause through My Cause My Cleats: Boston Children's Hospital. The participating patient of the hospital is 7-year-old boy named Robbie, who has hemophilia A. Patriots.com describe Robbie as, "...a bubbly, active and determined kid who loves to play golf and tennis, as well as swimming..." They also say that Robbie isn't cleared to play one of his favorite sports, organized football.
Being out on the field with Mac Jones is the "next best thing," and possibly even better than playing organized football. Robbie and Mac Jones have not met yet, but Jones says, '"I'm playing for him because he can't play football... I think this is a good way to bridge the gap between the kids who are battling every day, like us... Honestly, I'll be playing for something bigger than myself, just like a lot of other players are doing so. I think it's a really cool opportunity."'
