On December 1st, Worlds Aids Day, the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) awarded Garrett Hayes with the first-ever Jason Fulton Memorial Scholarship. Garrett is a student in Texas who is studying medicine and is diagnosed with hemophilia A severe.

The Jason Fulton Memorial Scholarship is an award that honors the memory of Jason Fulton. Fulton, a hemophiliac who died in 1995 at age 24, acquired AIDS from blood products used as treatment. "Throughout his life, Fulton was a strong hemophilia advocate and was widely recognized for living life fully," (HemophiliaNewsToday). According to Dr. Leonard A. Valentino, CEO and President of NHF, “NHF is thrilled to support such deserving and resilient young leaders like Garrett in furthering their education."

NHF's "young leaders" are supported in NHF’s National Youth Leadership Institute (NYLI), a two-year program aimed at supporting young people from the bleeding disorders they possess and creating a well-trained and recognized leaders community. According to the NHF, the Jason Fulton Memorial Scholarship "is awarded to young leaders who demonstrate the same determination, passion, and work ethic in support of the blood and bleeding disorders community that Jason had." The announcement of Garrett Hayes receiving the award was deliberately on Words Aids Day. You can read the full story here.
